California’s sweepstakes casino restrictions
California’s Gambling Control Commission identifies AB 831 as Chapter 623 of the 2025 statutes. Its summary of the enacted legislation explains that the measure addresses gambling simulations on websites and apps that award or connect participants with prizes of value. The commission lists January 1, 2026 as the general effective date for these changes. This is enacted legislation, not a proposal awaiting a vote.
The commission also distinguishes ordinary business promotions incidental to product sales from ongoing gambling operations. A casino-style product does not establish that it fits an exception merely by calling its redeemable currency a bonus or including a postal entry route. We do not list or promote sweepstakes casinos for California.
If you have an older California account
An account created before a restriction changed is not proof of continuing eligibility. Read the operator’s California closure notice and save a copy with your account history. Look separately for the last date for playing, requesting a redemption and contacting support: an announcement can set different dates for different account functions.
Ask support to identify which balance is redeemable under the applicable rules, what identity documents are needed and how a pending request will be handled. Do not treat a displayed play-money balance as cash owed. We cannot promise that an operator will honor a request or reopen an account. Keep the request number and written response if you need to pursue a complaint.
Recognizing misleading replacements
A familiar casino name on a new domain is not evidence that the replacement is permitted in California. Before sharing identification, establish who runs the site and whether the message came through your existing account. Do not use a VPN, a borrowed address or another person’s identity to bypass restrictions.
The California Attorney General’s sweepstakes and prize guidance explains warning signs and how to report a suspected scam. In particular, an unexpected demand to pay for a prize deserves scrutiny. A consumer complaint is a reporting route, not a guaranteed recovery service. If you only want entertainment, check that a game’s rules clearly say its credits cannot be redeemed; that is a different product question from accessing a sweepstakes casino.
