What is a sweepstakes casino?

A sweepstakes casino runs casino-style games on play coins and promotional sweepstakes entries. How the model works, what can be redeemed and what to check.

7 min read

A sweepstakes casino is a website or app with casino-style games, such as slots and table games, that you play with virtual coins instead of cash bets. It uses two currencies. One is for play only. The other is a promotional sweepstakes entry that, under the operator’s rules, may be redeemable for prizes.

This guide explains how the model works, where the coins come from, what can and can’t be redeemed, and what to check before you play.

What are sweepstakes casinos?

Sweepstakes casinos are online platforms that run casino-style games as a promotional sweepstakes. You never place a cash bet. You play with virtual coins that the operator gives you, or that come with a coin package you choose to buy.

The defining feature is that you can take part without buying anything. Operators hand out free coins, and they offer a free way to request sweepstakes coins. That design is what separates a sweepstakes casino from a lottery, as the legal section below explains.

Some sites use only a play currency, with no prize element at all. Those are usually called social casinos. Our list of sweepstakes casinos shows the operators this site covers, and our page on new sweepstakes casinos shows the most recent additions.

How do sweepstakes casinos work?

Sweepstakes casinos work on a dual-currency model. Your account holds two balances, and each one has a different job.

  • Gold Coins are for play only. They have no cash value and can’t be redeemed for prizes. You get some free, and you can buy more in coin packages.
  • Sweeps Coins are promotional sweepstakes entries. You can’t buy them. You receive them free, or as a bonus when you buy a Gold Coin package. Sweeps Coins in your balance may become redeemable for prizes once you meet the operator’s conditions.

You choose which balance to play from. Stake.us’s terms, for example, call Gold Coin play “Standard Play” and Stake Cash play “Promotional Play”. Only sweepstakes play can lead to a prize.

Operators don’t all use the same names. Stake.us calls its sweepstakes currency Stake Cash. High 5 Casino calls its play currency Game Coins. Our guide to Gold Coins vs Sweeps Coins covers the names and the differences in detail.

Why does a free method of entry matter?

A free way to enter matters because it is what keeps a sweepstakes from being a lottery. Under federal postal rules, a promotion is a lottery when it combines three elements:

  1. Prize. Something of value can be won.
  2. Chance. The outcome depends on luck, not skill.
  3. Consideration. You have to pay to take part.

The US Postal Service defines a lottery as any scheme or promotion that offers a prize based on chance and requires payment to take part. Its guidance on raffles adds that when one or more of the three elements is removed, the arrangement is not a lottery for postal purposes. Consideration is removed when people can enter without paying. The US Postal Inspection Service notes that lotteries are illegal unless run by states or certain exempt charities.

Federal law defines a sweepstakes along the same lines. Title 39 of the US Code describes a sweepstakes as a game of chance that requires no consideration to enter. The Postal Inspection Service’s consumer guide describes a sweepstakes as a promotion that awards prizes by chance and doesn’t require a purchase or entry fee to win.

Sweepstakes casinos keep the prize and the chance. Their promotional model attempts to remove the consideration element through free entry. Sweeps Coins are given away, and there is a free way to request them. This free route is often called an alternative method of entry, or AMOE. Stake.us and High 5 Casino, for example, both accept mail-in requests, and both set strict formatting rules for them.

What about Sweeps Coins that come with a Gold Coin purchase? Operators’ rules treat them as a bonus on top of the purchase. The purchase is for Gold Coins, and the free route gives people who don’t buy a separate way to get Sweeps Coins.

Two limits apply. These are federal definitions, and each state has its own lottery and gambling laws. States can treat casino-style dual-currency platforms differently from ordinary promotional sweepstakes, and may prohibit them or pursue them under existing gambling law. A free entry route also doesn’t settle whether a particular site is legal where you live. Our guide on whether sweepstakes casinos are legal covers that question.

How do you get Sweeps Coins?

You get Sweeps Coins free or as a bonus. You can’t buy them directly. The methods and amounts are set by each operator’s rules, and common routes include:

  • Sign-up offers. Some operators give coins to new accounts. The operator sets the amount and the conditions.
  • Daily bonuses. Some operators let you claim free coins once a day when you log in.
  • Bonus coins with Gold Coin purchases. Some Gold Coin packages come with Sweeps Coins as a free bonus. You are paying for the Gold Coins. The Sweeps Coins come with them.
  • Mail-in requests. You can request Sweeps Coins by post. Follow the operator’s instructions exactly. High 5 Casino’s rules, for example, say rejected request cards will not be reconsidered.
  • Giveaways and contests. Some operators run promotions on their site or on social media.

Every route above except the purchase bonus needs no purchase at all. That is what people usually mean by “sweepstakes casinos with no purchase required”. The model lets you play and request Sweeps Coins without buying anything. Check each operator’s official sweepstakes rules to see how its free entry works.

Can you win real money at a sweepstakes casino?

Not directly, and never without conditions. You don’t bet cash, and Gold Coins can’t be redeemed for anything. Sweeps Coins are the only route to a prize.

Under each operator’s rules, Sweeps Coins you hold may be redeemable for prizes. Depending on the operator, prizes can include cash, cryptocurrency or non-cash prizes. Before any redemption, expect conditions like these:

  • Playthrough. Operators require Sweeps Coins to be played a set number of times before they count toward a prize.
  • Minimum balance. You need a minimum amount of eligible Sweeps Coins before you can request a prize.
  • Identity checks. Operators verify who you are before they release a prize.
  • Eligibility. You must be in a state where the operator runs its sweepstakes, and you must follow its rules.

The value of a Sweeps Coin is set by each operator’s rules too. There is no universal rate. High 5 Casino’s rules, for example, say Sweeps Coins have no monetary value until they are redeemed.

Prizes can also come with costs. Stake.us and High 5 Casino both reserve the right to charge processing fees on redemptions. High 5 Casino’s rules also make the person redeeming responsible for any taxes on a prize. And there’s no guarantee you’ll win anything you can redeem.

Our guide to how to redeem Sweeps Coins walks through each step.

How are sweepstakes casinos different from real-money online casinos?

The difference is how money moves. At a real-money online casino, you deposit cash, bet it and withdraw winnings. At a sweepstakes casino, you never bet cash. You play with virtual coins, and you redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes under the operator’s rules.

Do state rules differ?

Yes. Where you can play, and what you can play for, depends on where you are. Operators’ own rules list the states where they don’t run their sweepstakes, and those lists differ between operators. They also change. Stake.us’s terms, for example, have added states to their excluded list several times since early 2025.

This guide makes no state-by-state claims. Check our state-by-state availability pages and the operator’s official rules before you play.

Who can play at a sweepstakes casino?

Sweepstakes casinos are for adults only. Age limits are set by each operator and, in some cases, by state rules. Some operators require players to be 21 or older. Stake.us and High 5 Casino both set 21 as the minimum in their rules.

You also need to be in an eligible location, and operators can check. Hiding your location breaks the rules at some operators. Stake.us’s terms list VPN or proxy use as a reason to suspend an account and withhold its balance.

What should you check before you play?

Check the operator’s official sweepstakes rules and terms first. They are the only authority on how that site works, and they change. Look for:

  • Free entry. How to get Sweeps Coins without buying, and the exact mail-in format.
  • Playthrough. How many times Sweeps Coins must be played before they count toward a prize.
  • Redemption. The minimum eligible balance, the prize types, any fees and the identity documents required.
  • Eligibility. The minimum age and the states the operator excludes.
  • Account rules. Limits such as one account per person, and what happens to coins if an account is closed.

How do you play responsibly?

Treat a sweepstakes casino as entertainment, not a way to make money. Coin packages cost real money, so only spend what you can afford to spend on fun.

  • Set a budget and a time limit before you start.
  • Never buy coin packages to win back what you’ve spent.
  • Remember that Sweeps Coins are promotional entries, not savings or income.
  • Take breaks, and stop when play stops being fun.

Frequently asked questions

Are sweepstakes casinos free to play?

Yes, you can play without paying. Operators give out Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins through bonuses, giveaways and mail-in requests. Operators also sell Gold Coin packages, and some packages include bonus Sweeps Coins. Buying is optional. Each operator's official sweepstakes rules explain its free ways to take part, so read them before you play.

Can you win real money at a sweepstakes casino?

Not directly. Gold Coins can't be redeemed for anything. Sweeps Coins may be redeemable for prizes, which can include cash at some operators, but only under that operator's rules. Expect conditions such as playthrough, a minimum balance, identity checks and state eligibility. Nothing guarantees you'll win enough to redeem, so treat play as entertainment.

What is the difference between Gold Coins and Sweeps Coins?

Gold Coins are for play only and have no cash value. Sweeps Coins are promotional sweepstakes entries you can't buy. You get them free, or as a bonus with a Gold Coin purchase. Only Sweeps Coins can be redeemed for prizes, and only under each operator's rules. Some operators give the coins their own names.

Why can't you buy Sweeps Coins?

Because Sweeps Coins are the sweepstakes entries. Under federal postal rules, a promotion that combines a prize, chance and a required payment is a lottery. Sweepstakes casinos give Sweeps Coins away and offer a free way to request them, so nobody has to pay to take part. What you can buy is Gold Coins.

How old do you have to be to play at a sweepstakes casino?

Age limits are set by each operator and, in some cases, by state rules. Some operators require players to be 21 or older. Check the eligibility section of the operator's terms before you create an account. Expect to verify your identity and your location before the operator will let you redeem a prize.
